This is one of a series of posters based on photographs by Michael Halsband advertising an exhibition of 16 paintings by Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat at Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York. (The artists had collaborated on these works between 1983 and 1983 at Warhol’s studio on Great Jones Street.) Halsband, who had established his career with his portraits of famous musicians and artists—and had been the official photographer for the Rolling Stones American tour in 1981—was invited by Basquiat to create photographs on a boxing theme for the exhibition’s promotional posters. (Warhol reminded him that Robert Mapplethorpe had already been asked to do the job—but ultimately agreed.) The resulting photographs, showing the two artists together and alone, were far more successful than the show itself, which was panned by critics.
