This poster was printed the year before the one hundredth anniversary of Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh’s death in 1990. The composition with its pipe (in this case a brightly painted one) above the phrase “Ceci n’est pas la pipe de Vincent” references René Magritte’s Surrealist masterpiece from 1929, The Treachery of Images, showing an image of a simple wooden pipe and the phrase “Ceci n’est pas une pipe.”
