This design highlights the fact that alcohol directly impacts newborns. Multiple studies conducted by Soviet authorities revealed startling rates of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, among them one showing that as many as 34 percent of children in orphanages suffered from the debilitating ailment, which can lead to facial abnormalities, heart defects, joint problems, and delayed growth.
