Chwast’s idiosyncratic design showing a brilliantly colored hand holding artist’s tools (a recurring motif in his work) as it emerges from a vintage typewriter is appropriate to the promotion of an unusual 2001 exhibition held at Grand Central Station featuring typewriters modified in various technical and artistic ways by the students of the School of Visual Arts. The exhibition’s enjoyably silly title might have been inspired by a popular film called The Next Best Thing, released the previous year and starring Madonna.
