This is one of seven designs produced by Will H. Bradley to advertise The Chap-Book, the “little magazine” initially issued by Stone & Kimball publishers of Chicago in 1894 to publicize its books. (Bradley also designed several of the company’s publications.) But the small-format magazine, with its experimental literary and artistic content, quickly drew the attention of avant-garde artists and writers, and became an object of interest in its own right. The limited color palette of this lithographic poster for The Chap-Book of January 1895 reflects Bradley’s early training as a printer; this approach reduced the number of plates needed for printing and made the process more efficient and cost effective. The fluid lines of the Art Nouveau, the chivalric theme described in the style of an early woodcut, and the influence of British aesthetic movement illustrator Aubrey Beardley situate it firmly within the avant-garde idioms of the 1890s.
