This is one of several posters designed by Milton Glaser for the Temple University Music Festival in the 1960s and ‘70s. The university in North Philadelphia had established the festival and an institute in 1968 as a school for young professional musicians and as a stage for world-class musical performances. In its time, the summer festival hosted such stars as Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, and Dionne Warwick. Glaser’s eccentric design incorporates one of his unusual composites, in this case a swan entwined about the head of a figure with a helmet and a severe classical profile suggesting winged Mercury; like the temple columns behind it, this appears to reference the university’s name if not its actual buildings.
