Here Chwast uses linoleum cut to create a poster for the 1986 retrospective of his work at Cooper Union, his alma mater. In a characteristically humorous and irreverent design, a fierce lion mask examines the designer from above through both a magnifying glass and a pair of binoculars as he sits drawing a similar mask at his desk, suggesting that the tables have been turned. Chwast also reversed some of the lettering announcing the show below the image. He recalled that “When my design was at the press, ready to print, I got a frantic call from the printer asking if the backward letters were a mistake. I assured him that they were part of the idea of a retrospective show.”
