Chwast promotes a 1984 exhibition of his own work at the Munich gallery Bartsch & Chariau with an image of a disembodied foot in an elaborately patterned platform sandal on a ground littered with used paint tubes. By his own admission, this poster violated Chwast’s rule that every aspect of a design should have a meaning. “This has none,” he wrote, “one image is as good as another for an exhibition poster.”
