Chwast was one of many artists commissioned to design comemorative posters for the Universal Exposition held in Seville, Spain, in 1992, an international event intended, like the other great exhibitions held since the mid-19th century, to showcase the art and industry of many nations. His spare, postmodern composition based on flat planes of blue and yellow is enlivened by the slightly comical figure of Christopher Columbus, who disembarked from Seville on his four voyages across the Atlantic; the explorer is clutched in the disembodied hand known as a manicule (as popularized in Victorian advertising) that also points the way to a distant shore. Behind this detail is a panel of Spanish polychrome tiles and the letters of the word “SEVILLA” emerge from the lower margin. It’s one of Chwast’s characteristically sophisticated images, at once eye-catching, humorous, and rich in historical and cultural reference.
