In one of the 27 posters he made for the School of Visual Arts’ “Subway Series” campaign, Glaser defies the fundamental rule of good poster design: that it must swiftly communicate a clear message to the widest possible audience. Safe in the knowledge that he is preaching to a captive audience stuck in a subway car, he offers a long and detailed exposition on draftsmanship, discussing the translation of a photographic image of Matisse to a drawing and addressing the Latin roots of the words “illustration” and “drawing.” It is a lesson, however, intended to captivate the prospective art student, pointing to the kind of erudite teaching that can be expected at the SVA, and not least from a distinguished professor like Glaser who had joined the faculty there in 1960.
