This is one of many posters that Chwast has designed for the American Cancer Society and one of several directed specifically at children. Here, as so often, he uses charming, comic imagery and text to engage viewers with a serious topic. It was issued in 1976, a critical year for the American Cancer Society; its California division launched the first Great American Smokeout on November 18, helping nearly one million people to quit smoking for the day. It became a national event the following year and has had a significant impact on lifesaving information and legislation.
