Rufino Silva was a Puerto Rican painter who studied in New York, Chicago, and Paris under the G.I. Bill, a U.S. government program that funded veteran education after service. He taught painting for more than 20 years at the Art Institute of Chicago until he retired in 1982. Silva was especially known for his paintings of sinister, powerful men juxtaposed by nude women in mysterious poses. Here, Lorenzo Homar has reinterpreted one of these paintings to promote an exhibition of Silva’s work in San Juan. It is unclear if he has been inspired by a specific work or simply by the general imagery and mood of Silva’s oeuvre.
