Chwast advertises an early computer conference in Anaheim, California, with a typically humorous and irreverent design. He presents himself (identifiable by the pipe) dressed in a light suit and summer hat as the unlikely subject of the composition, emphasizing the fine weather of the location over the tedious technical details of the conference and its state-of-the-art machines. He was obviously not inspired by the organizers’ description of the conference, which, they said, “aims to provide an overall picture of the computer industry as it has developed to date. Computer technology has permeated many areas of society in new and varied ways, such as its entrance into the office structure and the entertainment industry, and the opening up of a vast job market for women…Many new technological advances have been made and must be explored in depth for up-to-date information and optimum efficiency on the part of the computer specialist…” Only the rigid geometries of Chwast’s design allude to these hi-tech proceedings.
