In his poster for Verdi’s opera Macbeth, Stephan Bundi uses contemporary visual idioms to represent a historic narrative for a modern audience. Here, Macbeth is represented by a photograph of a nude man, a cartoon crown upended on his head to indicate his wrongful seizure of the throne; he is bathed in red pigment to suggest the bloody nature of Shakespeare’s tragedy.
