The first three buildings that comprise the Lincoln Center arts complex were announced to the public in posters by the distinguished artists Ben Shahn (Philharmonic Hall, 1962), Robert Indiana (New York State Theater, 1964), and Ellsworth Kelly (Vivian Beaumont Theater, 1965). This in-car subway advertisement by Push Pin Studios introduced the cultural complex as a whole to New York City; in it, each letter of the institution’s name was represented by actors, musical instruments, filmstrips, and other motifs associated with the performing arts. Push Pin also created images for one of the center’s calendars of events, and the studio continued to produce designs for performances at the institution over the subsequent decades.
