In 1979, PBS began to air all seven series of BBC Television Shakespeare (1978–1985), an ambitious project involving the adaptation to television of all of Shakespeare’s 37 plays. Glaser designed several posters for the series, including this one for Hamlet and those for Antony and Cleopatra, The Merchant of Venice, and The Taming of the Shrew. This is probably the most conventional of them but the ominous sky and the disembodied hand of Ophelia, protruding into the right side of the image to offer flowers, adds a characteristically eccentric note.
