In addition to his huge body of antiwar art, Chwast has made a number of posters for organizations advocating gun control. He designed this poster during the election campaign of 2000 between Republican George W. Bush of Texas and Democratic Vice President Al Gore in which gun control became a major issue. During the campaign, Gore, who was ultimately defeated by Bush, promised to veto any measure prohibiting cities from suing gun manufacturers while Bush suggested he might support such a measure—in one of many disputes on the subject. With this faceless, brown-suited politician, his features defined only by the contours of a handgun as he holds forth from his lectern, Chwast suggests that the actual candidate matters less than his position on gun control, a message reinforced in bright red letters against the dark ground.
