Chwast’s 1990 poster for the New York showing of an exhibition of American graphic design that had opened at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis the previous year (it later went on to the Design Museum in London) is, unusually for him, based on a photograph. In this case, it is the Metropole Hotel Building in New York, shown in 1909 covered in countless advertising posters and flyers shortly before it was torn down. It’s a witty take on the subject matter that also makes it especially appealing to a New York audience.
