Chwast was one of 45 international artists commissioned to design posters for the 1991 exhibition Un Hommage à Max Ponty at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris. The artists were asked to reinterpret Ponty’s iconic mascot for Gitanes cigarettes, created in 1947. Chwast’s witty design features the motifs based on vintage ephemera that often characterize his work and shows the shoes of a flamenco dancer casting the shadow of Ponty’s famous gitane (gypsy).
