This image of Hollywood movie star Greta Garbo wearing the black beret and the mysterious expression with which she was often photographed during her 1930s heyday is one of four silkscreen prints that form part of Chwast’s “O” series, also featuring close-up portraits of Pablo Picasso, Groucho Marx, and Satchmo (Louis Armstrong). Chwast selected the subjects for this series because they names ended with ‘O’. It is one of 25 artist’s proofs printed before the image was published in an edition of 150 by Ambassador Arts. Here Chwast subverts the polished conventions of Hollywood portraiture, presenting the screen diva with a blue face described by “pointilliste” dots and with some of the pieces of colorful confetti that form her name falling across it.
