Dance Works Rotterdam, a state-funded modern dance troupe, was founded in 1975 as Werkcentrum Dans by choreographer Kathy Gosschalk, who renamed it De Rotterdamse Dansgroep in 1988. This poster was designed under the art directorship of Ton Simons, who renamed the company Dance Works Rotterdam after his arrival in 1999. It promotes a program that included Simons’ own work “Mortal Coil” and New Yorker Stephen Petronio’s “Lareigne” that toured internationally. The brightly colored composition features a black-and-white photograph by Pieter Leenheer of two nude dancers in performance, suggesting the company’s raw, authentic style.
