Stefan Sagmeister founded his graphic design studio in New York in 1993 and established his reputation with his CD covers for the Rolling Stones, Lou Reed, and David Byrne before moving onto other commercial projects. This is one of a series of pro-bono designs he created for the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA). In this poster promoting the 1997 AIGA Biennial Conference in New Orleans, the headless chicken hurtling around the field invites graphic designers to stop running around aimlessly and actually attend the conference. It also references a Voodoo ritual in New Orleans where the conference was located. The image, combined with a lot of humorous text in the designer’s scrappy handwriting describing an informal, lively event full of food, drink, and even dancing also subverts the slick, bland products and ideologies of contemporary advertising, suggesting that this event will be something else altogether.
