The rather menacing-looking bear with dark sunglasses clenching a pencil in its jaw in Chwast’s design for the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) 1996 Design Camp is “designed to excite or frighten the designers who attend” says Chwast. The composition, incorporating his typically comic play on words and images, also references the location of the camp in Lake Quinault in Washington State, an area known for its black bears.
