In his 1903 poster for Macmillan publishers advertising its new book, Helena Rutherford Ely’s gardening guide, A Woman’s Hardy Garden, R.K. Richardson combines stylized floral motifs reflecting the influence of the British Arts and Crafts movement with the integrated image and lettering characteristic of the American literary poster of the period. Richardson designed several book covers for Macmillan around this time, including those for The Late Returning by Margery Williams Bianco (1902) and Charles Major’s Yolanda: Maid of Burgundy (1905) as well as for many other major publishers, among them Scribner and The Grafton Press. The woman watering her plants in a voluminous dress and an abundantly feathered hat is representative of the upper-class American women who founded and joined garden clubs from the 1890s in an effort to expand their social and intellectual lives beyond the home. An increasing number of books like this one were intended for this very audience.
