Chwast’s color-saturated city scene promoting the newest version of the famed Herman Miller furniture company’s workstation product Action Office suggests a comic strip or children’s book illustration, one in which he combines shameless promotion with engaging comic detail. The speech bubbles of dialogue in which the figures comment on how their world is improving and the vertical structure of the composition reinforce the optimistic message. Consultant Ralph Caplan developed the design and text with Herman Miller’s in-house graphic designer Stephen Frykholm, who decided to hire a famous graphic designer (Chwast) for the project, allowing it to serve both as an advertisement and as a gift for special clients.
