In a poster promoting an exhibition about the history of Broadway musicals at the IBM Gallery in New York, Chwast replaces postmodern visual pyrotechnics with a collage composition of illustrations and historic photographs, presumably the material the viewers of this kind of exhibition most wanted to see. The man in the striped shirt holding a wooden hoop is actually Fred Astaire, photographed as he appeared in a performance of the song “Hoops” in the original 1931 production of The Band Wagon. In the foreground next to Little Orphan Annie is Ethel Merman in the role of Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun (1946).
