As an extremely prolific and successful children’s book illustrator, Chwast was the ideal designer for a poster promoting the 40th International Design Conference in Aspen in 1990; that year’s theme, “Growing by Design,” focused on design for children. The two children shown here with bizarrely elongated necks are entirely representative of Chwast’s kooky sensibility. The conference itself was in operation between 1951, when it was established by Walter Paepcke, president of the Container Corporation of America, and 2004 and reflected the ethos of the German Bauhaus, promoting a close collaboration between art and commerce. While in the first few decades, the audience and speakers were mainly from both the business and design worlds, by the time Chwast made this poster, the conference was more specifically design oriented.
