This is one of many posters that Chwast designed in the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s for British television series presented on PBS under the Mystery! and Masterpiece Theatre titles and sponsored by Mobil. This one promotes Scoop, a two-hour television film produced in 1987 by London Weekend Television in the U.K. and based on a story by Evelyn Waugh; it was first shown on PBS in December 1990. The tale is set in the 1930s and concerns a country newspaper columnist who is mistakenly sent to cover a war somewhere in Africa. Chwast’s eye-catching, cartoonlike illustration, featuring the singularly ill-equipped journalist riding on a goofy-looking camel, suggests the comic nature of the protagonist’s escapades.
