Chwast’s illustration for this poster advertising the 1989 Masterpiece Theatre presentation of the 1987 British TV series The Charmer, set in the 1930s, is characteristically humorous and clever, seamlessly integrating text and image. The protagonist, a playboy and conman played by Nigel Havers, is shown seated in his sportscar, cigarette in hand, as the hands of various women reach in and the faces of others appear in the car’s side mirrors. He turns to look at the viewer with an expression of wide-eyed innocence. Masterpiece Theatre (now Masterpiece) first aired on PBS in 1971; Alistair Cooke, whose name appears here, introduced the programs from then until his retirement in 1992.
